When the sum of excess Adds up to not quite enough. I go to find you, But you always win at blindman's bluff. You find your center At the ragged edge of town. I never could quite enter, Couldn't follow you down. You live by sleight of hand. I never know where you stand. Don't look ahead, no master plan. Get through each day by sleight of hand. When the price of sadness Is more than you can bear to pay. When you think that it might bind you, You find another card to play. You find your center At the ragged edge of town. I never could quite enter, Couldn't follow you down. You live by sleight of hand. I never know where you stand. Don't look ahead, no master plan. Get through each day by sleight of hand.

I’ve counted the minutes And lost track of the days Memories drifting A chaotic ballet Revolutions wind down Leaving nothing but spinLong after the battles That no one could win Oooh... I remember the rain And the light behind the shadows At the time you couldn’t explain But I remember the rain Misty and twisted Where the gnarled trees grow We wandered like pilgrims In the soft twilit glow I couldn't answer The pain in your eyes They were the color of water In a gray cloudy sky Oooh... I remember the rain And the light behind the shadows At the time you couldn’t explain But I remember the rain It’s the light that makes the shadow The distance we’ve yet to cross It’s the rain that washes down through us Was anything really lost? We carry things forward From a long time ago When I didn’t hear you When I didn’t know But now I can see you In sharp relief You helped me remember What I always believed Oooh... I remember the rain And the light behind the shadows At the time you couldn’t explain But I remember the rain

Crooked fingers pointing out a crooked lie. Crows cry murder as they cross dark skies. They spy out secrets with their ant-black eyes Wheel in circles as the crow flies... Spill your dreams like water on the earth. The path is rugged to a painful birth. Clouds ride heavy in their steel-gray girth. What would a single drop of rain be worth? Here it lies The end of everything that can’t be disguised. In unsettled skies Courting chaos where the crow flies. Meet me halfway, meet me on the plain. Meet me in a place beyond the reach of names. Call me softly, call me insane I’ll take no credit, yeah I’ll take the blame. Here it lies The end of everything that can’t be disguised. In unsettled skies Courting chaos where the crow flies. Above our heads flocks track Glide an easy path Light slips through Tints the ground deep blue. Just enough to see It’s not the way for me Where the crow flies free Is not the way for me. Give me sympathy, give me shame. Give me nothing, it’s really all the same. Give your company, I won’t make a claim. Our roads’ converging no matter where we came. Here it lies The end of everything that can’t be disguised. In unsettled skies Courting chaos where the crow flies. Ignore their cries We can’t be shackled to these crooked lies In unsettled skies Courting chaos where the crow flies.

I used to think there'd be a day
When something swept these blues away. We've all seen things fall apart.
We've all wondered where to start.
It seems profoundly broken.
It just seems all too hard. Every day, it's little things
In my neighborhood a child sings. See the laughter in her eyes Watch a new world start to rise. Find a way to make it simple. Although the change is hard. So light a fire
But don't fan the flames A world of difference But still the same Ignore the chaos
Don't play the game Share a vision
Share a greater name A slow fire keeps us warm.
Outside the flames of discord storm. We make connections, play a part, Resolve the mystery of our hearts. Find a way to make it simple. Although it seems so hard. So light a fire
But don't fan the flames A world of difference But still the same Ignore the chaos
Don't play the game Share a vision
Share a greater name We can be together
It's not a choice of whether
 The world will change
One way or another.
It all starts with a whisper
See her eyes - can you resist her? All the noise and division
Can fade away. Every day, it's little things
In my neighborhood a child sings. See the laughter in her eyes Watch a new world start to rise. Find a way to make it simple. Maybe not so hard.

We collect our piles of stones. Weather-worn but ours alone. I'm not sure what we'll choose to build. The cracks have grown - cold water's stilled. We've set our course by falling stars, Held onto hope, beneath the scars. Chipped away hard won facades. We've fight ourselves ... we fight the odds. Your smile takes me to the past. The feeling's strong but will it last? But something's hollow at the heart. Still disconnected, still far apart. All those times I've met your eyes. I've seen your truth, I've seen your lies. We're more than just the things we need. We'll pick some flowers from the weeds. We'll build a bridge or build a wall. We'll build it long or build it tall. It may stand or may just fall. We'll build a bridge or build a wall … Or build a wall. We've gone around the world to find. It was one step backward all the time. Memories are a two edged sword. We're keeping things we can't afford. Weighed down by our shared debts. What to forgive, what to forget? It's where we end, not where we start, That shapes the limit ... of the heart. We'll build a bridge or build a wall. We'll build it long or build it tall. It may stand or may just fall. We'll build a bridge or build a wall. We'll build a bridge or build a wall. We'll build it long or build it tall. It may stand or may just fall. We'll build a bridge or build a wall ... Or build a wall.

Night-driving on a mountain road, From the top I see a city down below, It's laid out; it's grayed out A perfect grid in a ghostly amber glow. There's static on the radio. Faint music from a time so long ago. It takes me; it breaks me I wonder if I really want to know. Somewhere in a sea of far off light. I feel you pull me in the night. The rearview mirror holds me tight. This winding road just twists away from my headlights. My headlights. Up where the road and valley meet. The grid becomes a maze of crooked streets. Just waiting, debating Will I feel its cobblestones beneath my feet? I reach the city as the sun comes up, Feeling like a cracked and empty cup. You fill it; I spill it; This time I think I've used up all my luck. Somewhere in a sea of far off light. I feel you pull me in the nigh The rearview mirror holds me tight. This winding road just twists away from my headlights. My headlights. I remember how you cared And all the things we used to share. Somehow I lost you, lost my sight Blinded by my own headlights. My headlights. This winding mountain road twists away from my headlights. My headlights.

When you strolled into Porphyry You knew exactly one thing about you Your name is Trouble And you didn't have a penny or a clue. The city's locking up As the sun is going down. The streets are empty canyons. You're a stranger in this town. Hell, you're a stranger in your life— And that's trouble. A run‑in with some sketchy types Puts you on a slow freighter to nowhere. And there among your crew,  Some ghostly faces from your past—beware. Do you really want to know Why your memories slip like sand? Why your reflexes are lightning? Why there's thunder in your hand? You're a  very scary of man— And you're trouble. You could build a life If you could just tear down the walls of secret shame.  You could save your soul If you could only make the ghosts give up their names And tell you everything  You don't want to know— Like who the hell you are. Who's the man that dogs your tracks? Who's the child whose laughter haunts your dreams? It's cold consolation  That out in space nobody hears your screams. Now you know you're running,  And you might not get away. But you want to know the secrets; You pursue them anyway. You'll find a place to make a stand And that's trouble. You'll find a place to take your stand— And make trouble. You'll find a place to make your stand, 'Cos you're Trouble.

You live in Amsterdam. Safe behind a dark stone dam. Then it begins to crack, The sky goes from blue to black And there's no going back. The heart of every drop of rain, A speck of dust that falls to earth again. Can you withstand the flood? The water and the mud, It echoes in your blood. Ooh when the cloudburst comes, You'll feel you've been struck dumb. You may want solitaire, But blood just doesn't care. Have we lost our common thread? Can we map this dry lakebed? When the water’s run its course, Can we still find the source? And get beyond remorse? You are not the mask you wear, More than just the things you bear. Static builds and jumps the gap, The things we need may overlap, I just know I want you back. Ooh when the cloudburst comes, You'll feel you've been struck dumb. You may want solitaire, But blood just doesn't care. The rain is falling hard. It feeds the thirsty ground. Feel the pressure build, Feel the red blood pound. It's really no one's fault. Fresh water washes away the salt.

You knock down my door Standing there frozen. Mumbling excuses For the things you have chosen. You always were wild. You were chaos in motion. I was your anchor. Or was it deadweight emotion? All of the waiting All the debating Makes a perfect circle of logic. You're disappearing And all that I'm hearing Is poetry I can't understand. Don't speak to me in a dead language. With words I'll never know. Don't speak to me in a dead language. With words piled like the walls of Jericho. You seek me out To tell me you can't be bothered any more. Is it rage or indifference That keeps you standing at my door? The more that I pull back From the hints and allusions The closer you draw in Using words as illusions. All of the waiting All the debating Breaks the perfect circle of logic. You're disappearing And all that I'm hearing Is poetry I can't understand. Don't speak to me in a dead language. With words I'll never know. Don't speak to me in a dead language. With words piled like the walls of Jericho.

You have burned your candle To waxy pools and smoke. But you will find your fire when you come home. You never made a promise No word you ever broke But I will hold you tight when you come home. Far from all desire You made a pillow of hard stones But I'll wrap you in soft blankets when you come home. Aching and breaking Solitude is all you own. But you'll sleep among the grasses when you come home. You have tasted water From emerald pools so clear. Bathed in silver radiance Of the mist that gathered near. You fought the lonely battle, Until your spirit broke. Your eyes told me your story Before you ever spoke. Battle scarred and rattled By all things you've lost. But you will be renewed when you come home. Duty once called And now you grapple with the cost. But all debts will be forgiven when you come home. As you traveled farther The land withered down to brown. You dined on husks and promises. Wore your sorrow like a crown. You fought the lonely battle Until your spirit broke. Your eyes told me your story Before you ever spoke. You will find your fire. I will hold you tight. I'll wrap you in soft blankets. You'll sleep among the grasses. You will be renewed. All debts will be forgiven. When you come home.

Dead of winter. I washed up at your door at nineteen. Full of questions— You fed me apple pie and I Stayed past summer To hear the words and music meant for me. A place to be. If I'd heard nothing but your voice, If I'd seen nothing but your face, If I'd felt nothing but your love Still I would come. "If..." I sought connection Was looking for the Lord of Seasons. His reflection Illumined common ground. I found All my answers Were hidden in a slice of apple pie. And that is why The road that I traveled twisted and turned. I found its every pothole and its dead end streets. Then I found the path to heaven Ran right through your living room. Where every refugee and seeker had a seat. Through the years you've Put your hands to thread and needle With His pattern Until the quilt was done. And one Of the pieces You worked into the quilt so carefully Was patchwork me. If I'd heard nothing but your voice, If I'd seen nothing but your face, If I'd felt nothing but your love Still I would come. "If..."

I met a man locked in battle. He said "that's the way it's always been". Bow my head when sabers rattle, Do I lose every time you win? Who says that yesterday is hallowed? When they're all just borrowed days. You may think every pool has shallowed. We lose tomorrow in the haze. People say the world is dying. That somehow we let it slip away. So much pain, it seems there's no replying. No chance to find a middle way. Who says that yesterday is hallowed? When they're all just borrowed days. You may think every pool has shallowed. We lose tomorrow in the haze. Ink black and tight These fever dreams. Unbound and bright Light pours between the seams. Transforms this starless night Reveals what lies between The valley and the heights What we need. What we need... In my head I mapped the world. Stayed within the lines I'd drawn. I think it's time to break the compass I think it's time I just moved on. Who says that yesterday is hallowed? When they're all just borrowed days. You may think every pool has shallowed. We lose tomorrow in the haze. I think it's time to break the compass I think it's time we just moved on.

Working at the edge of something you don’t quite know how to feel. Knowing that the center cannot hold, the surface tension yields. Radiating out in waves of certainty, and then it falls apart. Collapsing back into itself, just one beating heart. Conflicting signals, an avalanche of noise. How do we know? A pointillistic portrait of the world resolves to black and white. Connecting dots to make some shape out of a starry night. You understand the world in terms of what you filter out. The more you encounter certainty, the more you find you doubt. Yet preconceptions shape everything we see. How do you know? When the outside noise is all too much, Just crashing in your ears When you can’t be sure just where you’ve been Or what happened to the years. All the moments caught in amber drops Random patterns coming clear, Leave us straining to hear whispers. Blocking out the propaganda becomes a daily grind. Predigested bits of fact sold as eyesight for the blind. They overlook monstrosities, outraged by petty crimes. What common lens can we all use to see outside our time? Do you feel the pull of something, a way outside the maze? How do you know? The pull - It’s never ending - It’s undeniable - A babel Of labels All branded And stranded The change It’s never ending - It’s undeniable - How do we know? When the outside noise is all too much, Just crashing in your ears When you can’t be sure just where you’ve been Or what happened to the years. All the moments caught in amber drops Random patterns coming clear, Leave us straining to hear whispers.

about

Jeff and Maya Bohnhoff San Jose, California

Jeff and Maya have an identity crisis. Their music is sometimes uproariously funny parody (like their spot-on "Bohemian Rhapsody" parody "Midichlorian Rhapsody", or hauntingly beautiful, like "Road to Jerusalem" or "Manhattan Sleeps". One way or another, their music will create strong emotions. Jeff and Maya have been creating music together since 1979, and plan to continue for some time to come. ... more
